Happy S'new'd Year! (Almost)

Image
I made a snood from the free pattern that Karen made WORLD FAMOUS on her blog, Did You Make That? , a few months ago. Now she can add New York City to her world map of snoods ! I bought this Merino wool yarn from the Brooklyn General Store in early December and started knitting it up at a friend's apartment nearby. The wool came from upstate New York and was so fresh it still had some hay in it. Talk about organic! Does that happen? I'm a novice knitter, so it was nice to work on a project and actually have something at the end of it! I knitted 2 more snoods (another Merino wool one and one from baby alpaca for my mom, both made in Virginia). I was able to whip up the 3rd one pretty quickly; after watching National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and The Philadelphia Story I was done! (By the way, I added this project to the  "Celebrations" theme  over at the Sew Weekly.) Some tips for those who are new to knitting: There's a contraption at the yarn store that

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas!

Wherever you may be in this great big world of ours, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas surrounded by those you love. Thanks so much for all of your lovely comments this past year, or even for just quietly reading along! To anyone who may have lost a loved one this year, I hope the spirit of the season and the comfort of friends and family help you through....or perhaps you'll come across touching, unexpected moments that make you smile, such as the one in the photo above (even if they did get cat hair all over your ironing board). And, in closing, may Santa's journey not be as treacherous as the one from this Christmas classic, otherwise there may not be many sewing goodies awaiting us this year. Santa-proof that house, Griswold! Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!  :)

Some last minute business called me away to New York this past week, leaving my almost-complete Oolong dress on the sewing table a bit longer. Argh! I'm still in the city and just thought I'd share some photos of a new-to-me fabric and knitting store I visited in Brooklyn today. It's called the Brooklyn General Store and is located in Carroll Gardens. I used to live around here and never knew this existed, but then again I wasn't sewing in those days so... It looks like an old-fashioned general store (or it actually was  one, not sure). I love the ladder on the track up against the shelves seen in the photo on the left. I wanted to climb on it and sail across the room like Belle in Beauty and the Beast! Behind the ladder is a box full of Colette Patterns. There are also a lot of cute Japanese fabrics. Have you been here? I was good and didn't buy any fabric! I did pick up some yarn for a little knitting get-together a friend is having tomorrow. I'm going to att
