New Trinkets and Fabrics

Our trip to Florida last week included a stop at the Japan Pavilion at Epcot in Disney World, and there I found some fun cotton fabrics to take home with me! They're not fat quarters but they're sold in small amounts. I had no idea you could buy fabric in Disney. 


I should say, the bottom 3 fabrics are from Epcot and the top brown one is from Sew L.A. Fabric. I said I wasn't going to buy more fabric until I completed 5 projects, which I haven't, but I can't actually make a garment from these so I'll give myself a pass (and I was on vacation!). 

The brown fabric is "Playing with Horses" by Heather Ross for Kokka, part of the Far, Far Away III Collection. Little children playing with toy horses, how cute! The red and white fish fabric in the center is soooooooo soft. These two fabrics will turn into gifts for a little girl. Also, it's become quite obvious that I love blues and reds, even the blog uses those colors!


I also bought this pretty sunglasses case at the Japan Pavilion. I love that store, the Mitsukoshi Department Store to be exact. The case was an early Christmas present from my aunt, and it goes nicely with the wallet I already have.

In non-Disney news, I recently won this nifty Orco pin-it skirt marker off eBay! Super excited about this one, I've already put it to good use. I first heard about it through Sunni's blog, A Fashionable Stitch, and she made a good point of going for the (A) pin version rather than the chalk version and (B) the mini skirt length rather than the regular length. Her marker is a Singer but they look identical except for the label on the metal base.

I'm pretty sure I'll never make a mini skirt, but the nice thing about this one is that it also covers above-knee hems. It seems like earlier hem markers are suited more for tea length dresses, as was the style of the day. That won't be a typical length for me so I'm happy Sunni pointed that out, as I wouldn't have thought about it otherwise. See her cool "action" photos of how this thing works!

Apparently mine has never been used, so someone packaged it 40 years ago just for me ;) The nice thing is the little piece of cardboard and rubber band to hold the metal clamp in place is still there so I can keep it from hanging out when not in use.

I just couldn't pass up this week's theme challenge over at  The Sew Weekly .  You choose a movie that has been nominated for an Academy Award in Costume Design as your inspiration and have the week to complete the look.  The first thing I did was look through the list of nominees and pick out ones I'd seen.  I love old movies, but in the end I settled on Pleasantville .  The idea of making a '50s style dress and doing the black & white/color photo was too fun to pass up!  Plus, I love Pleasantville .  I watched it again the other night and enjoyed the thought-provoking story line. I based my inspiration on the dress Margaret Henderson wears when she and Bud go to Lovers Lane, the scene she changes from black & white to color. In the Navy: My 1940s "Seabee" Trousers

Oh, happy day, my high-waisted, wide-leg "Seabee" trousers are finally finished! It all started when I decided to join  The Cupcake Goddess ' Trouser Sew-Along back in January, which finished in February I believe (it's been awhile). I didn't do the official sew-along BurdaStyle pattern. Instead I went with a pattern I already had in my stash, the 1940s Empire Waist Trousers from the Decades of Style Pattern Company  in Berkeley, CA. She updates vintage patterns from the 1910s to the 1950s, so this pattern is a style that would've been sewn up by home seamstresses of the early 1940s! These trousers are so incredibly comfy - I LOVE them!  Please excuse the overcast day. It's the best we can get around here lately. (And, I'm freezing!) Cat Got Your Sewing?

I was in the middle of working on a self-drafted A-line skirt when... ...Gizmo decided to nap on the lining. I figured I could use the non-cat bed portion of the desk to pin together the fashion fabric when... ...Mr. Darcy decided to mooch in on the rest of the available surface space. Oh well, so maybe I could, I don't know, iron something. That was a good idea until...   ...actually, it was never a good idea. Silvie had been snoozing there - for hours! Unbelievable. But hey, the sewing machine is free! I guess this means I'm supposed to finally get around to altering my sister's pajama pants (see animal print fabric at center right of photo) I had promised to do months and months ago? Those kitties, always knowing what's best...   At least Mr. Darcy looks rather fetching in my hat. A little sly one-eyed seductive look, is it not?
